INTERGENERATION SOLIDARITY AS A GUIDE

Abstract

When it comes to the mutual relation of young people and the elderly, mutual respect and respect, the current situation in Serbian society points to the lack of empathy of young people towards the elderly and the general crisis of values. Establishing a system of values in relation to young and older through education and upbringing in school benches will lead society into the desired direction of mutual respect and respect.

The method of analysis and synthesis of two reports on application evaluations identifies a common need to promote intergenerational solidarity and dialogue between children and older members of society who need support in local communities. The subject of the analysis is: (1) National Strategy on Aging adopted by the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the period 2006-2015. with proposals for a new strategic framework and (2) evaluation of the application of Civic Education as a compulsory elective subject in elementary and secondary school. The aim of the paper is to promote intergenerational solidarity and socially responsible behavior through education in schools within the framework of Civic Education. The expected results are aimed at promoting values that lead to solidarity about the responsible and committed life of children and young people in contemporary civil society. While in the subject Civic Education too insist on rights, and insufficiently on obligations, children avoid responsibility.

In the evaluation after nine years of implementation of the National Strategy on Aging, it was concluded that in the school curriculum there is insufficient topics dealing with aging and age issues and that the overall implementation process is slower than planned and expected. Based on the results of the evaluation, after twelve years of realization of the Civic Education course, it is proposed to revise the curricula and design professional support / training for teachers of this subject through the project “Bring bread”.

Activities defined by the project and supported by the educational program lead to the approaching of young elderly people, developing volunteer skills and skills of young people, and at the same time affecting the quality of life, above all the elderly. The promotion of intergenerational solidarity is the responsibility of not only the state, but also all members of the community. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the work on improving intergenerational solidarity, in addition to education in schools and through awareness-raising campaigns, organizing humanitarian actions and cooperation with local community representatives. The significance of the project “Bring bread” is influenced through the school system to the socially responsible behavior of the youth. Focusing children on the human relationship towards the elderly would develop a sensitivity for the elderly in children. On the other hand, with the media support, the project would contribute to the popularization of Civic Education. The positive perception of the environment on the subject Civic Education would be accelerated, and thus the importance of the subject matter would be accelerated.

Raising the society about the necessary and necessary care for the elderly who have remained without adequate support should start at the school bench.
