LECTURE ON LANGUAGE REFORM IN THE RUSSIAN HOUSE
On Thursday, October 26, the lecture “Vuk Karadžić’s reform of the Serbian language and its political consequences” was held in the Great Hall of the Russian House. The lecture was organized in cooperation with the Association of Friends of Serbian Culture and the Russian House. Zoran Milošević, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, and Dajana Lazarevic, Master of Philology, spoke at the lecture.
Dr. Zoran Milošević pointed out the political consequences of the reform, moving away from the Old Slavic roots and discontinuity in culture, while Ms. Dajana Lazarevic referred to the letter patterns that Vuk Karadžić took from the Old Slavic Cyrillic script and the new ones he introduced. Examples of cultural monuments testifying to the Old Slavic language of our ancestors were also presented, and it was analyzed how much the language and script changed after the reform.
The lecturers also referred to the loss of linguistic similarity with Eastern Slavs, primarily Russians, after the reform. They concluded that the consequences of the reform had a profound impact on the Serbian language and culture, and today’s misinterpretations of the said reform cause even greater damage.
