YOUNG IN THE SOCIAL PROTECTION SYSTEM
CONTRIBUTION OF SUPPORT MEASURES TO THE QUALITY OF EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN ROMA STUDENTS
Abstract
The Roma population, in disproportionately larger numbers compared to the general population, faces multiple forms of marginalization, including economic, educational, spatial, and cultural marginalization. The focus of this research is on the field of education, as a key tool for breaking the cycle of social vulnerability. It is done by considering the available support measures from the Republic of Serbia and the civil sector in the context of their contribution to the quality of educational experiences in Roma students. The study centers around the perceptions of Roma students and professionals within educational institutions and the civil sector regarding the importance of support measures and their implications on educational achievement, educational aspirations and dropout rates among Roma students. Additionally, the study encompasses the obstacles encountered by Roma students when accessing and remaining in the education system. The research concludes with recommendations for improving the quality of educational experiences for Roma children. A qualitative methodology was employed in this study, using semi-structured interviews with significant actors related to the research question. The research results indicate a positive contribution of available support measures to the quality of educational experiences for Roma students. It is leading to improvements in educational achievement, retention rates and educational aspirations. Despite the progress achieved, there is still room for change and further development of the support network, which will be further explored in the paper.
